On risque d'en voir un peu plus sur les routes françaises de cette A110 moderne et dans un nouvel uniforme: La gendarmerie nationnale (et en l'occurence la BRI -Brigade Rapide d'intervention-) aurait commandée 36 exemplaires.

This bus is considered one of the most sought-after and valuable collector's items among classic car fans.
In 1939, just 12 Futurliners were built by the Yellow Truck and Coach Company in Pontiac Michigan. The designs were by GM design boss Harley Earl. Each Futurliner had the same dimensions: 10 metres long, 2.50 metres wide, 3.60 metres high. And it had a weight of 13.5 tonnes. At that time, the Futurliner was powered by a 4-cylinder diesel engine with 150 hp. The production costs at that time amounted to 105,000 US dollars. Today, this corresponds to about 1.8 million US dollars or 1.65 million euros.
The buses were originally designed for the so-called "Parade of Progress" - a pompous road show that GM organised to demonstrate its latest vehicles and technologies inside the Futurliner buses. At the time, General Motors produced not only cars, but also other small technical appliances, such as microwaves or televisions. The "Parade of Progress" started in Florida in 1941 and went on to visit 250 other cities in the USA, Mexico and Canada. By 1956, eleven million people had visited the gigantic fair on wheels.
After two successful parades, the parade was discontinued in 1956. The Futurliners were then donated or cannibalised. One vehicle suffered a total loss during the last parade. Nine vehicles are still known to exist today, two are considered missing. After 1956, however, the Futurliners disappeared completely from the scene.
Our Futurliner is Futurliner #9, which was used as a reception car at the parade.
In 1984, Bob Valdez, a part-time hairdresser from Sherman Oaks, California, was looking for a 1950s GMC Sceencruiser. He found #9 in a parking lot near San Fernando and immediately fell in love with the unusual vehicle. At that time, however, the car had already been sold. In the end, the original buyer could not raise the money and Valdez got the bus for a measly 2,500 US dollars. At first, he wanted to have the car professionally restored, but when the restoration offers came to a quarter of a million dollars, he decided to do the restoration on his own. He bought a portable welder and the accompanying "DIY" video. Initially, he received no support from GM. After many letters and pleas, the company finally donated a 366 cubic inch V8 engine to get the car moving again. In the end, it took Bob Valdez more than fourteen years to completely restore his Futurliner and finish the interior. The interior now resembled an art deco bar.
Futurliner #9 was the first Futurliner to be seen on the streets again after they had disappeared from the scene. Don Mayton, a GM employee, saw the Futurliner parked at a traffic light in Palm Springs in the mid-90s. He snapped a few photos and began investigating what an unusual vehicle it was. He was infected by the "Futurliner virus" and subsequently tracked down #10. Through its restoration he became known and helped the Futurliner to new fame.
